Every photographer has a rhythm before a session begins.

Mine usually involves a little caffeine, checking the light, and making sure everything is ready so my clients can walk into a relaxed experience instead of feeling like they stepped onto a movie set.

Those quiet moments before a session are where the preparation happens. They help set the tone for everything that follows, and honestly, they make a huge difference in how comfortable everyone feels once the camera comes out.

Caffeine First. Always.

Caffeine is part of the routine.

Not just because the extra energy helps, but because it gives me a few minutes to slow down and mentally walk through the session. I think about the location, the light, and the people I am about to photograph. That small pause helps me show up focused and ready.

Checking the Light

Light is everything in photography. Before a session begins, I usually take a few minutes to look at how the light is falling across the location.

Maybe the sun is dipping behind a row of trees, or maybe there is a perfect patch of open shade that will create soft portraits. Scouting those little details ahead of time means we can move smoothly once the session starts.

Camera Settings + Angles

I also like to take a few test shots before clients arrive. It helps me dial in my settings and make sure everything is exactly where it needs to be.

That way, once the session starts, my full attention can stay on the people in front of the camera rather than on adjusting equipment.

Creating a Relaxed Atmosphere

The biggest part of my pre session routine is simple. I remind myself that most people feel a little nervous in front of the camera at first.

My job is not just to take photos. It is to guide the experience so it feels natural and fun. A little conversation, a few laughs, and some gentle direction can turn those first nervous moments into genuine smiles pretty quickly.

Why Preparation Matters

When a photographer takes time to prepare, sessions feel smoother for everyone involved. There is less pressure, fewer awkward pauses, and more space for natural moments to happen.

That preparation is part of what allows clients to relax and simply enjoy the experience.
